The Coen Brothers remake of the Western classic True Grit has been nominated for 10 Oscars.

The Jewish directing duo Joel and Ethan are up for the Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Director awards.

They were last nominated for the awards in 2009 for A Serious Man, and have won Oscars for their films Fargo and No Country for Old Men.

The film’s young star, Hailee Steinfeld, who has a Jewish father, was named in Best Supporting Actress category.

Other Jewish filmmakers and actors in with a chance of winning at this year’s Academy Awards, held on February 27 in Los Angeles, include Darren Aronofsky, Natalie Portman, Jesse Eisenberg and Aaron Sorkin.

Mr Eisenberg has been nominated for Best Actor for his star turn as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network. He is up for the nod against the 127 Hours star James Franco, who has a Jewish mother.

Mr Sorkin has been named as one of the hopefuls for Best Adapted Screenplay, while his film is up for several other awards including Best Picture.

Ms Portman could repeat her success at last week’s Golden Globes with a win in the Best Actress category, for her part in Mr Aronofsky’s ballet thriller Black Swan.

The film is competing also against The Kids Are All Right, written by Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg, and The King’s Speech, written by David Seidler, in the Best Picture category.

Another Year director Mike Leigh could take home the nod for Best Original Screenplay.

In the Best Foreign Language Film category, Dane Susanne Bier was nominated for In a Better World. The film won at the Golden Globes earlier this month.
