Orthodox magazine in porn shock

An orthodox Jewish magazine has been pulled from newsstands across Brooklyn because it contained pornographic material.

A recent issue of the glossy magazine Haolam Hacharedi featured images of work by the artist Olek, who covers sculptures and even whole apartments in yarn. Her first solo UK exhibition, currently showing in London, includes crocheted emails and text messages that Olek herself has received. Some of these can be seen in the images published by Haolam Hacharedi.

One raunchy text mentions genitalia and a sex act. Another urges "Wake up and play with me!", and yet another says the soul is "the part of you that sees a lap dance every time you close your eyes".

The editors of the Hebrew-language publication apparently failed to notice the text messages, which were crocheted into the walls of the pictured yarn-covered apartment. The bulk of the publication is taken up by stories about the week's Jewish events and the religious figures attending them.

Rabbi Padwa, head of the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations in London, issued a letter forbidding the sale of the offending edition. Anyone who had already purchased a copy, said the rabbi, should return it unread.
