Amazon sitcom The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, which focuses on a Jewish family in Manhattan during the 1950s, has been nominated for the Best TV musical or comedy prize at this year’s Golden Globes Awards.

Star lead Rachel Brosnahan, who plays housewife Miriam “Midge” Maisel, was also nominated for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series award, in a sign of the critical acclaim the series has received.

Last month the JC was among those to praise Mrs Maisel, calling it “non-stop kosher comedy.”

Steven Spielberg was also celebrating a Best Director nomination for Pentagon Papers drama The Post. The upcoming film stars Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep as Washington Post journalists who clash over whether to publish classified documents about the war in Vietnam.

The Post received a total of six nominations during Monday morning’s nomination announcement from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California.

James Franco was nominated in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy catagory for The Disaster Artist.

Despite proving to be a massive box office smash there were no nominations for the Wonder Woman film or for Israeli actress Gal Godot or the film’s director Patty Jenkins.

Controversial Israeli film Foxtrot was overlooked for a foreign film nomination, after winning the Silver Lion at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this year.

But Christopher Plummer was nominated for a Golden Globe for the role in which he replaced Kevin Spacey.

The actor took over the role in All The Money in the World at the last minute, after a string of sexual harassment allegations were made against Mr Spacey.

The nominees for best drama film were Call Me by Your Name, Dunkirk, The Post, The Shape of Water and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Dame Helen Mirren and Dame Judi Dench are among the British nominees.

They are in the best actress in a comedy or musical category, alongside Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie and Emma Stone.

Gary Oldman is nominated for best actor in a drama, for playing Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour.

The 75th annual Golden Globe Awards will take place on 7 January, hosted by US comedian Seth Meyers.

Today’s announcement was hosted by Kristen Bell, Sharon Stone, Alfre Woodard and Garrett Hedlund.
