A book by a prolific Israeli writer has been shortlisted for an award honouring translations of books.

Amos Oz, one of the most influential writers and intellectuals in Israeli history, is the author of dozens of books, short stories and essays.

His Scenes from Village Life, a mystery set in a pioneer village, has been shortlisted for Nicholas de Lange's English translation. The winner of the Best Translated Book Awards will walk away with a £5,000 prize.

Mr Oz, a recipient of numerous awards including the Dan David prize and the Israeli Prize for literature, is one of 25 authors whose books appear on the shortlist.

Also in the running is Hungarian writer Imre Kertesz, for his novel Fiasco.

In 2010, The Confessions of Noa Weber by Israeli author Gail Hareven won the award.
