American conservative group attacks Obama nominee

articlemain

A soon-to-be released report from the conservative organisation, Americans for Limited Government (ALG), has attacked President Barack Obama’s nominee to head the Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) because she sent her children to a politically left-wing Jewish summer camp with alleged Communist roots.

An experienced labour economist who has spent most of her career working for the Federal Reserve, Dr Erica Groshen, 58, was nominated to be the BLS commissioner in February.

After receiving a PhD in economics at Harvard in 1986, Dr Groshen worked as an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland and became its economic adviser in 1991. In 1994, she moved to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, where she has held a series of positions, including head of international research, and assistant vice president.

The ALG, unhappy about Dr Groshen’s nomination, has attacked her by complaining that she sent her children to Camp Kinderland, whose website describes it as “a camp founded in 1923 by Jewish activists as a retreat for their children.”

During the 1950s, the US House Un-American Activities Committee and New York state scrutinised the camp for its alleged Communist ties, which Camp Kinderland’s website refers to as “Red-baiting witch hunts.”

The website says: “It has…remained an independent entity run as a not-for-profit organisation.”

ALG is now putting pressure on the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labour and Pensions (HELP) to reject Dr Groshen’s nomination.

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labour and Pensions is expected to take her nomination up in hearings soon.
