Robert Bowers, the suspected perpetrator of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting was treated in hospital by a number of Jewish doctors and medical staff.

Dr Jeff Cohen, the president of the Allegheny General Hospital , where Mr Bowers underwent surgery after being wounded in a shootout with police, insisted: "My job isn't to judge him".

In the wake of the deadly shooting, in which 11 congregants were murdered on Saturday, Dr Cohen gave an interview to Channel 4’s Jon Snow.

Dr Cohen, himself a member of the Tree of Life synagogue, added: “My job isn’t to judge him. That’s a pretty awesome responsibility. My job is to take care of him.

”He was severely injured and he got great care here. Many of the people that attended to him were Jewish and they’re heroes.

“They did like the cops did. They did their job. They went and they confronted the problem, and they were true to their core beliefs and I’m very proud of them."

Dr Cohen, who was present at the hospital when Mr Bowers was admitted, said the patient was “scared and confused”.
