A hit Israeli television series about a returning prisoner of war is to be screened in Britain later this year.

Hatufim (Prisoners of War), which follows the attempts of two Israeli reservists kidnapped in Lebanon to rebuild their lives after they return home 17 years later, will air on Sky Arts 1 from May.

The series shows the soldiers in the past and present, looking at the fate of a third man who was kidnapped at the same time and highlighting the questions the pair face over their loyalty to Israel.

The ten-episode series won critical and popular acclaim in Israel when it was shown two years ago. It has since spawned a US remake, the first episode of which was broadcast in the UK on Channel 4 earlier this week.

The remake, Homeland, said to be President Obama's favourite show, transports the action to the US, with a soldier returning from Iraq, and stars Claire Danes and Damian Lewis.

Last month it won a Golden Globe award for Best Television Series.

Sky Arts director James Hunt praised Hatufim's "finely crafted writing". He said: "We are delighted to be able to bring this brilliant and gripping foreign drama to the UK for the first time."
