Three men warned by police over antisemitic abuse aimed at strictly Orthodox family

Three men accused of hurling antisemitic abuse at a strictly Orthodox family while throwing eggs at their car have been given cautions by the police.

The men allegedly shouted “F***ing Jews” and “Kill the Jews” at the 28-year-old Jewish man who was driving with his partner and child when the attack occurred in Blackwall Tunnel, east London, earlier this month.

Dave Rich, deputy director of communications for the Community Security Trust, said the punishment “definitely seems lenient. In general, we would look at that incident and think a police caution feels pretty light.

“But on the other hand, we know that the victim is happy with how the police handled it, and as an organisation which deals directly with victims of hate crimes, that carries a lot of weight with us.”

He rejected the idea that the community should be worried about the police’s reaction, pointing out that “the police took the report seriously, investigated it, identified the offenders and arrested them. That’s the worst hurdle, the most difficult one.

“People should be encouraged that police will take those reports seriously - and if people are not satisfied with the outcome of a caution, they should say that to the police from the outset.”
