Supreme Court hears case against Orthodox housing society

Hackney mothers says policy of Agudas Israel Housing Association is discriminatory

articlemain

The country’s highest court has been asked to decide whether a Charedi housing group in Stamford Hill has the right to cater only for strictly observant Jews.

A mother of four known only as Z has challenged the Agudas Israel Housing Association and Hackney Council in the Supreme Court.

From a family described as “not member of the Orthodox community”, she claims the policy of AIHA amounts to discrimination.

The Appeal Court last summer ruled in favour of AIHA, in particular recognising the housing needs of Hackney’s Charedi community whose families are more than two and a half times larger than the average for the borough as a whole.

Charedi Jews were more likely to experience poverty and deprivation than mainstream Jews, the Appeal Court noted.

A two-day hearing took place at the Supreme Court earlier this week.
