Police increase patrols after fears of Kedem-style protest

articlemain

Police have increased patrols in a Jewish area of Salford amid fears that local businesses could be targeted by pro-Palestinian boycotters.

Greater Manchester Police said it had assigned more officers to Leicester Road, a main shopping street lined with stores selling kosher goods. The move came after a man was witnessed taking photos of shops in the area.

Residents fear the possibility of a picket similar to the long-running demonstration outside the Kedem store in the centre of Manchester.

Pro-Palestinian protesters were moved away from Kedem last month, but have now established a camp nearby.

Meanwhile the Salford home of a member of the Jewish anti-Zionist Neturei Karta group was pelted with eggs and daubed with graffiti after its occupant attended an anti-Israel rally.

On Monday, pro-Palestinian groups and websites claimed Yankel Zemmel had been forced out of his home after being targeted by a Jewish mob.

Local paper reports said that he had also been assaulted. Police confirmed that an assault had taken place in July but said that it had not been aimed at Mr Zemmel

A 'To Let' sign has now been placed outside Mr Zemmel's house and he is understood to have moved to London. Police said they were investigating incidents of criminal damage at the property.

● Two men have been arrested for making Nazi salutes in London's Oxford Street. Police said they had been bailed to appear at a hearing next month.
