One Direction fans received a surprise Yom Kippur message from boy band member Harry Styles.

The floppy haired pop star, 19, who is not Jewish, told fans that he planned to fast this year.

Before Kol Nidre came in on Friday night, he tweeted: “Eating as much as I can now. Gonna be a tough 25 hours.

“My problem is I am always hungry straight after kol nidre.

“Fast well everyone!”

More than 90,000 Twitter users favourited the message and over 75,000 followers retweeted it.

The heart-throb, who is rumoured to be seeing top British model Cara Delivigne (whose step-grandmother is JW3 funder Dame Vivien Duffield), has made regular references to Jewish life on Twitter that have become the subject of fevered speculation among One Direction’s Jewish fans.

In February, he thrilled followers by posting a Purim tweet that read: “Happy Purim everyone! Enjoy your seudah today and boo loudly at hamann during the megillah!! x”

A month later, he tweeted: “Looking forward to Seder night. Always get a bit nervous when I have to sing ma’nish ta’na. But do love a schmorreh matzah. Happy pesach.”

He also regularly tweets in Yiddish; wore a silver Star of David around his neck at the Teen Choice Awards this year; and is a regular at pan-asian kosher restaurant Met Su Yan in Golders Green.
