Manchester University agrees to boost security

The new vice-chancellor of Manchester University has met representatives of the Jewish community to discuss security concerns on campus.

Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell, who took up her role at the university only last week, held a meeting with representatives from the Board of Deputies, Manchester Jewish Representative Council and the Community Security Trust on Monday.

Relations between the community and the university have been tense since demonstrators attempted to attack Israel's deputy ambassador Talya Lador-Fresher after she spoke to students on the campus in April. The university is now producing a report to develop new guidelines for how it will deal with protests on campus.

Lucille Cohen, president of Manchester Jewish Representative Council, said: "I am satisfied that new measures will be taken to deal with the situation of protests if they arise again. The systems in place at the university will be made more robust and the university is producing a working paper on the topic."

Jonathan Arkush, senior vice-president of the Board, said: "It was clear to us that the university and the Jewish community share a common perspective about many of these issues."

He said the meeting would provide "a strong platform" for future relations.
