A photo of two men dressed in Nazi uniforms which was posted from a Greater Manchester Police Twitter account has been deleted.

GMP Traffic tweeted the picture of the men in SS officers uniforms standing next to a parked German military vehicle.

A police car was parked alongside the vehicle. The caption read: “"M62 J22 On the west Yorkshire border. These two likely lads trying to invade"

The men had come from a World War Two re-enactment event taking place in Saddleworth, in Greater Manchester. Black SS uniforms with red armbands had been banned, but other SS uniforms were permitted at the event if the SS insignia was not visible.

Stamford Hill Twitter user Shulem Stern, who is a member of the Shomrim volunteer security group, saw the tweet and complained to Manchester Police Authorities, who removed it.

A spokesman for the GMP described the tweet as “unacceptable” and apologised for its content, saying that “this matter has been referred to GMP’s Professional Standards Branch”.
