Maccabi footballer questioned after incident

An amateur footballer has been arrested on suspicion of threatening players with a 12-inch knife during a Maccabi game.

Paul Samuels, player-manager of the South Mancs A side, was shown a red card for punching an opponent, but then allegedly pulled a blade out of his kit bag on the touchline.

The incident happened just before half time in his side's over-35s Maccabi Masters league game against Hendon Harriers in Edgware, north west London, on Sunday. The match was immediately abandoned.

Officers from Harrow CID are investigating. On Wednesday police arrested a 40-year-old man from Enfield, north London, on suspicion of affray. He was later released on bail until February.

Masters League chairman Stuart Lustigman said: "We are all extremely upset. The player has been expelled by the club and we expect the London FA will ban him for life with immediate effect."

Keith Goodman, who refereed the match, said: "I have never seen anything like this in Jewish football. It's very sad and highly embarrassing."
