Luciana Berger tells of fears for her safety over anti-Semitic abuse

Luciana Berger, the Labour MP, has told a court how she "felt sick" when she saw antisemitic blogs describing her as "a rodent" and a "money grabber".

She said she was "incredibly concerned" at internet postings such as one using a classic antisemitic stereotype comparing a member of the Jewish faith to a rodent. "I felt sick really,” she said. “It's attacking me for my faith or religion and not something I have said or done for my constituents."

The Liverpool Wavetree MP was giving evidence during the trial of an alleged antisemitic blogger at the Old Bailey. Joshua Bonehill-Paine,24, had allegedly posted a series of hate-filled articles after blaming Ms Berger for the imprisonment of a far right colleague he described as a "comrade." Ms Berger revealed that she feared for her personal safety since she was elected as a Member of Parliament.

She said: "I have received antisemitism since I was elected as an MP." But the court heard how the messages escalated following the imprisonment of far-right activist Garron Helm in October 2014.

The prosecution said Ms Berger received in excess of 2,500 messages on Twitter as part of an alleged antisemitic “Filthy Jewish Bitch” campaign launched by the defendant.

Ms Berger told the court: "It's fair to say I was the most concerned I have about my personal safety since I was elected.

"It was in the midst of this ‘Filthy Jewish Bitch’ campaign the police were in constant contact with me. "They were in my office and home and assisted my personal safety. "I had police patrolling outside my home and office. “It was because of those patrols that demonstration happened outside my office in support of Garron Helm.”

She said at the time she “felt very much under attack". Ms Berger also told the court how she had received death threats and had to endure abusive messages on social media which were a result of the ‘Filthy Jewish Bitch’ campaign.

She had found the ordeal "incredibly hard." She revealed steps had now been taken to ensure her safety in the future.
