A one-day conference organised by Jewish Labour activists will feature speeches from backbench MPs and panel discussions on antisemitism and problems within the party.

The Jewish Labour Movement confirmed this week that the event in London would encourage supporters to “reflect and consider the challenges facing us”. It comes after two years of controversy over antisemitism allegations in the party.

Confirmed speakers at the conference, on September 3, include Labour MPs Louise Ellman, Ruth Smeeth, Wes Streeting and John Mann. They will be joined by Danny Rich, Liberal Judaism’s senior rabbi and prospective Labour council candidate, and Michael Goldstein, the newly-elected United Synagogue president.

The group said the timing for the event was important, coming after this year’s UK general election, the Israeli Labour party leadership contest, and ahead of the party political conference season.

Andrew Gilbert, chair of the JLM conference arrangements committee, said: “We are creating a gathering that reflects our experiences of the best types of conference, such as Limmud in the Jewish community and the Fabians or Progress in the Labour community.”
