Hull City striker Yannick Sagbo suspended for quenelle support

articlemain

Hull City striker Yannick Sagbo will be suspended for the first two games of the Premier League season following his support for Nicolas Anelka’s infamous quenelle gesture.

Sagbo had claimed Anelka was a "legend" when he performed the antisemitic sign during a match last December.

The Ivorian admitted an aggravated breach of the Football Association’s rules relating to improper conduct on social media postings at an independent commission hearing in April.

He was fined £15,000 but the FA appealed the independent commission's sentence, saying it was "unduly lenient as to be unreasonable".

The appeal was upheld on Thursday and the punishment increased.

Sagbo will now miss the Tigers' first two matches of the 2014/15 season which begins in August. The decision cannot be challenged further.

The striker had been charged with making a comment that was “abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper”, with “a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion or belief”.

He posted the tweet hours after Anelka performed the gesture — a form of Nazi salute — while playing for West Bromwich Albion in a Premier League match.
