Hendon named key election 2015 battleground by Labour

Hendon has been pinpointed as a key battleground constituency by the Labour Party as Britain marks the halfway point between the 2010 and 2015 election.

The north London constituency was won by Conservative Matthew Offord at the last general election. Mr Offord triumphed over his rival, Andrew Dismore, by just 103 votes.

In a list, published on the website Labour List, Hendon is placed third in the rankings of seats the party considers key targets in two year's time.

The last census reveals that Barnet's Jewish population is the largest in the UK, rising by nearly 16 per cent to 54,084 over the last decade. Another Conservative-held Barnet constituency – Finchley and Golders Green – appears at 89 on the list, which is compiled in order of the swing necessary for Labour to win.

The Cannock Chase seat currently held by Conservative MP Aidan Burley, who faced national embarrassment in 2010 after reports surfaced of him at an allegedly Nazi-themed stag party, is at number 50. His opponent, Janos Toth, is the son of a non-Jewish Holocaust refugee who fled Poland to escape the Nazis.

Other seats on the list include Liberal Democrat seat Manchester Withington, Harrow East, now represented by Bob Blackman but Labour between 1997 and 2010, and Brighton Pavilion, held by Green Party MP Caroline Lucas. Liberal Democrat MP Sarah Teather's Brent Central seat is 23rd on the list while Lee Scott's Ilford North constituency is 83rd.
