The deputy Prime Minister has praised the Jewish value of "tikkun olam" or healing the world in a message wishing the community a happy New Year.
Nick Clegg, referring to British Jewry's "rich cultural history and religious traditions spanning back hundreds of years", said there was "so much we can learn from the Jewish community here".
He said the community was one "whose achievements have made such a significant contribution to all aspects of British economic, cultural and social life, and whose core values such as tikkun olam bring benefits which reach far beyond the Jewish community.
"It's inspiring... and it reminds us that - whether it's the small daily challenges of everyday life, unrest in our local communities, or seemingly irreconcilable conflicts - we must always remain positive and hopeful."
He added: "I wish the Jewish community in Britain and across the world a happy and sweet new year and an easy fast."
