articlemain

Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich has has lost his place as one of Britain's top three richest men, according to the Sunday Time Rich List.

The Russian oil billionaire, who is worth £9.3 billion and is by far Britain’s wealthiest Jew, went from third place in the 2012 list to fifth this year.

The Reuben brothers, placed eighth in 2012, rose to seventh place thanks to a fortune that now stands at £8.2 billion. Property entrepreneurs David and Simon Reuben, who are of Iraqi Jewish descent, have seen their wealth steadily increase since 2010, and have now appeared in the top 10 for three consecutive years.

In general, the last 12 months have been good ones financially for some of Britain’s most prominent Jewish names, with retail magnate Sir Philip Green and WPP chief executive Sir Martin both seeing their fortunes soar.

The trend is reflected across the list, which reveals that Britain’s 200 wealthiest people have a combined wealth of £318.2bn, eight times more than when it was first published in 1989.

The list celebrates its 25th birthday this year. The first list included Jewish businessmen Lord Sugar and Gerald Ronson in the top 20.
