The activist behind the planned Charedi protest of the Board of Deputies’ annual dinner has called it off on the advice of Orthodox rabbis.

Shraga Stern announced the demonstration last month, telling the JC that he objected to the notion that the Board represents the British Charedim – the largest strictly Orthodox community in Europe.

He was planning to demonstrate outside the body's annual dinner next month. London Mayor Sadiq Khan is due to attend as the guest of honour.

But, on Friday, Mr Stern said: “The demonstration will not be going ahead on the advice of my rabbis. However, my objection to the Board of Deputies remains unchanged.”

The Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations (UOHC), the umbrella body for Charedi shuls, initially appeared to support Mr Stern's activism, but withdrew its backing earlier this month after he wrote to Mr Khan to urge him to pull out of the dinner.

Despite the clash between Mr Stern and UOHC, the union has since written to him to say it intends to continue to work with him, praising his “absolute commitment to communal welfare”.

Dovid Frand, the chairman of the UOHC, wrote: “I wish to clarify that the letter we wrote last week to the Mayor and to the Board of Deputies was not intended to curb or denigrate your great work.”

In a footnote, Mr Frand added: "In any event we have not been affiliated with the Board of Deputies for over 40 years in accordance with the guidance of [the late] Rabbi Padwa of blessed memory, and our relationship with them is as the Talmudic expression: 'each to their own'.”
