Producer and director Ben Winston is celebrating after winning his first Brit Award - for his role in a One Direction music video.

The pop group picked up the award in the Best British Video category for their hit Best Song Ever.

Mr Winston, who runs the Fulwell 73 production company with three Jewish partners, appeared on stage with the five youngsters at London's O2 Arena on Wednesday evening.

Singer Harry Styles thanked him for directing the video. The voting for the award was conducted on Twitter.

Former Leeds University JSoc president Mr Winston subsequently wrote on the site that winning was "an amazing honour, proper dream come true. Thanks so much to everyone who voted".

He has enjoyed professional collaborations with stars including Gary Barlow, David Beckham and Brits presenter James Corden.

One Direction are signed to the record label of music mogul Simon Cowell, who also posted his thanks on Twitter.

"Thank you everyone for voting for best video. It is a brilliant video. Congrats to the boys and Ben who made it," wrote Mr Cowell.
