Bid to show the 'true face of Hamas'

Campaigners from a new grassroots group which pledges to "expose Hamas's true face" say they will step up their efforts to inform the British public about the Islamic resistance movement.

The independent Campaign For Truth will also encourage the media to report more accurately on Hamas's ideology.

On Sunday, activists took part in a leafleting session on London's Oxford Street and at Marble Arch. It was the group's fifth public event since it was founded two months ago.

Roy Goldman said Campaign For Truth had been set up because its members felt "nothing was being done" to combat Hamas or raise Israel's voice in Britain.

Mr Goldman, who moved to Britain from Israel four years ago, said: "It went really well on Sunday. We expected some resistance from anti-Israel groups, but it was fine. We had about half a dozen people handing out fliers and getting people to sign our petition.

"We got about 100 signatures and gave out more than 700 leaflets. We want to give the pro-peace, anti-terror line, a voice. This is a pro-Israel group but we don't want to concentrate only on hasbarah [public relations].

"We don't want to spend our time explaining why Israel does this or that. Our point is that Hamas wants to annihilate all Jews and that's the problem."

The campaign will also attempt to tackle what it calls the BBC's "very selective" reporting of Hamas, as it believes the information the Corporation presents to its audience is "incomplete".

Mr Goldman said: "BBC reporting on Palestinian issues uses very selective information and facts about Hamas. Withholding facts from the public is wrong. The news-viewing public has a right to know and to be informed fully.

"Such misinformation is detrimental to peace and does no favours to either the Palestinians or Israelis.

"Our success on Sunday showed we do not need to be afraid, we can stand anywhere. The fear in the community is misplaced," added Mr Goldman.
