A campaign has been launched to help raise money to support an 89-year-old barber whose shop was looted during the riots in Tottenham.

Aaron Biber, a member of Waltham Forest Hebrew Congregation, lost his wife last year. Born in Cable Street, he built up his businesses in Tottenham High Street over several decades and is a popular figure in the local community.

He arrived at his shop on Sunday morning to find the place smashed up, with windows broken and hairdryers looted. Even his kettle had been stolen.

"They're meshuggenahs," he said. "It's mindless."

Two interns at the advertising agency BBH saw his plight on the news and were moved to start fundraising to "keep Aaron cutting".

"Donate a pound so Aaron can get his shop back up and running so he will not have to worry how he's going to make a living at his old age," they said.

Mr Biber's nephew Eddie, a solicitor, who has helped with the clear-up operation at the shop, said: "That's just amazing that it's people just looking to help out. I know the council has got a committee set up to try and help people."

Their appeal has raised more than £11,000 so far.
