The musical version of Mel Brooks’s famous horror/comedy film is coming to the West End, with Lesley Joseph playing a starring role.

The cast of the Young Frankenstein musical, which is due to open in London in late September, was announced on Friday.

Hadley Fraser will be playing the role of Dr Frederick Frankenstein, a descendant of the original Victor Frankenstein, who inherits his forebear’s famous castle and discovers a book called “How I Did It”, which he uses to create a monster of his own.

Ms Joseph will be playing Frau Blucher, the Frankenstein family’s housekeeper in Transylvania, whose very name causes horses to rear in fright (a role played by Cloris Leachman in the original movie). Ross Noble will be playing the part of Igor, the misshapen Frankenstein family retainer.

Last year the Birds of a Feather star was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, partnering up with Anton du Beke and lasting until week five of the competition.
