Emily Grossman to champion study of STEM subjects

Doctor will be championing people who work to inspire students to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Dr Emily Grossman has been named as an honorary ambassador at the 2017 STEM Inspiration Awards.

The British medical researcher along with astronaut Tim Peake will be championing the 30,000 ambassadors who work to inspire young people to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Dr Grossman, who specialises in molecular biology and genetics in the field of cancer research, is a regular broadcaster on science subjects and has been a panellist on the Sky1 panel show Duck Quacks Don't Echo.

As well as commentating on science in the media, she talks in schools, universities to encourage students, especially girls, to study STEM subjects.

She said: “My aim is to show people just how exciting science is, and to make it more accessible by explaining complex concepts in a fun and engaging way.”

The awards take place on Wednesday at the House of Lords, hosted by Lord Sainsbury.

A spokesperson for the awards said: “Our two honorary STEM Ambassadors Tim Peake and Dr Emily Grossman stand as champions for the importance of STEM education, promoting the ideal of a world-leading STEM education for all young people and acting as aspirational role models, demonstrating how far STEM can take you.”
