The gunman who took four Jews hostage in a Texas synagogue was reportedly twice referred to the British government’s Prevent anti-extremism programme.

Malik Faisal Akram was put forward over concerns about his anti-Western and conservative Islamic views, the Times reported.

Sources reportedly said Mr Akram was referred first in 2016 and again in 2019 but it is unclear whether the future gunman engaged with the voluntary scheme.

His case was not considered by Channel, the programme which deals with the most severe Prevent cases, the Times said.
