Eat your heart out, Carol Vorderman. Fourteen-year-old maths whizz Chana Bernstein was selected to take part in the European Mathematics Challenge in which she scored in the top 25 per cent.

She was one of three million students from 46 European countries to participate.

Chana, a year nine pupil at Immanuel College, Herts, was invited to do so after gaining exceptional marks in the UK Mathematics Challenge held earlier this year. Around 5.5 million pupils took part in that one. She tells People: "I wasn't really expecting to get through so I was really surprised. The questions were reasonably hard. They were more logical."

Chana, who lives in Hendon, north London, and is a member of the Ner Yisrael Community, says she would definitely like to study maths in the future. "It is a bit early to decide about university but I do really like it." Unsurprisingly, it is her favourite subject at school, although art and physics come a close second.

The maths challenges were organised by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust.
