North-London artist Ali Miller is putting on her most meaningful exhibition yet. Her show, Brave Soldier And Black Butterfly, which is currently on at the Bacon Street Project, East London, commemorates the life of her father, Hanania Miller, a former Israeli soldier and award-winning photographer, who died of cancer last April — five months after being diagnosed.
The exhibition contains more than 30 paintings representing her father, who served during Israel’s Six-Day War.
Ms Miller, 29, tells People: “The idea to call it ‘brave soldier’ came because when someone is sick you call them a brave soldier, and also because my dad was a soldier in the army. The pieces show elements of his cancer journey but it also shows that my dad’s life, soul and spirit still live on in me and the world around me.” Money raised is going to the North London Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support.
She has been working on the show for around a year. “It’s been very emotional and it’s still going on.”
The showpiece displays are boxed assemblages created from personal belongings, including some of her father’s photographs which appeared in publications including Time and Life magazine.
She will be exhibiting at the Affordable Art Fair in March.
