Did you know that 75 per cent of the universe could be made up of a mysterious substance known as dark energy?
Professor Ofer Lahav, head of Astrophysics at University College London, will talk about this, and other cosmological phenomenon, at a joint conference with the Weizmann Institute later this month.
Israeli-born Professor Lahav, 51, who is leading several high profile international projects on dark energy tells People: "One of the greatest mysteries in science is the prospect that 75 per cent of the universe is made from dark energy. Since a further 21 per cent is made from invisible 'cold dark matter' that can only be detected through its gravitational effects, the ordinary atomic matter making up the rest is apparently only 4 per cent of the total cosmic budget."
He became interested in astronomy when he was a boy growing up in Tiberias. "I looked at the stars and puzzled over it."
