Leaders of Britain's Charedi community have urged David Cameron to do more to help Syrian refugees.

Orthodox social action charities Interlink and Agudas Yisroel, alongside rabbis from the North London Muslim Jewish forum, welcomed the prime minister’s commitment for the UK to take in 20,000 refugees from camps over the next five years.

But in a letter to Mr Cameron, they said: “Whilst we commend the Prime Minister for his efforts, we would strongly support further initiatives addressing the humanitarian crisis unfolding before our eyes.”

The letter, signed by Rabbis Avraham Pinter and Herschel Gluck, added: “60,000 members of our community in Britain today are the descendants of refugees or Holocaust survivors, or were refugees themselves.

“Had it not been for the hospitality and welcome of this country, none of us would be here today. We are eternally grateful for the opportunity for a new life that Britain extended to us.

“As we watch another people from another part of world facing displacement and death, we as Jews have a duty to speak out.”

The leaders also called education in British schools to counter “appalling situation in which British-born terrorists are perpetrating atrocities in conflict zones around the world.

“The values of tolerance, democracy and peaceful co-existence between different faiths has never been more important. These values are fundamental to Jewish faith and Torah teachings.”
