Rape trial for IDF man

articlemain

One of the IDF's most prominent combat commanders has been charged with rape and sexual assault.

Brigadier-General Ofek Buchris will face trial after being accused by two female soldiers, one a mid-rank officer, who served under him in the past.

Bri-Gen Buchris, 48, was seen by many in the IDF as destined to reach the top of the military pyramid following nearly three decades of service, including as commander in the Golani Brigade, where he led operations in Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza.

The allegations of rape, which emerged last year as he was about to be appointed to the key role of IDF Operations Division commander, not only saw his promotion cancelled, but sent shock-waves through the army and Israeli public.

The religious father-of-six had been a hugely respected figure.

Bri-Gen Buchris has denied the accusations. His trial will be heard next month in a military court.
