Peace talks to begin on Tuesday

articlemain

Peace talks between Israel and Palestine will resume on Tuesday in Washington DC, Israeli Energy and Water Resources Minister Silvan Shalom has said.

Justice Minister Tzipi Livni, responsible for Israel's negotiations with the Palestinians, is expected to participate in the Washington meeting.

Saeb Erekat, the head of the Palestinian negotiating team, will be present, along with US Secretary of State John Kerry.

Before the meeting, the Israeli cabinet is expected to approve the release of 82 Palestinian prisoners who were involved in attacks against Israel and who have been imprisoned since the pre-Oslo Accords period.

Israeli ministers are also expected to approve a bill that will require a national referendum on any peace deal.

The meeting in Washington on Tuesday is expected to set the agenda for ongoing negotiations. Palestinian borders and Israel’s security demands will also be discussed. The talks are expected to last approximately nine months.
