British tourist killed in Jerusalem bus stop bomb

articlemain

The woman killed in yesterday’s explosion near the central bus station in Jerusalem was a British tourist.

Police said Mary Jean Gardner, 59, was not carrying any identification when the bomb exploded in the early afternoon, as schools were breaking up for the day. It had been left in a bag beside a stop along the 74 bus route.

Ms Gardner was studying at Hebrew University and had been in Israel since January.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: “We can confirm that a British national was
killed in a bomb blast in Jerusalem yesterday.

“Next of kin have been informed and we are providing consular assistance.”

More than 30 other people, including two pregnant women, were injured in the attack.

The blast was the first bomb explosion in the city for seven years.

The woman’s death comes nine years after Glasgow-born teenager Yoni Jesner was killed in a Tel Aviv suicide bomb, carried out by Hamas.
