Israel rarely enjoys an hour of prime-time BBC TV, especially when it has nothing to do with the Middle East conflict.

So let's hear it for Hairy Bikers Simon King and Dave Myers, who devoted Tuesday's episode of their BBC2 Chicken & Egg series to exploring the country which, they informed us, eats more chicken per capita than any other in the world.

"Israel is one big food fight where only the tastiest survive," enthused the duo as they sampled shakshuka, shnitzel and shwarma in a place that can also boast the first known chicken farm, from 2,500 years ago.
