Boris Johnson is not the only one with a new mayoral role. Octogenarian Ron Silver has become the first mayor of Irthlingborough, a town in East Northamptonshire.
A former vice- chair of the ward of Irthlingborough, Mr Silver, 80, was inaugurated in the new, non-political, role last week.
“I won’t be wearing a uniform but I will wear a chain of office,” Mr Silver tells People. “It’s quite an honour, being the first Jewish mayor in East Northamptonshire.”
A ward councillor for five years, Mr Silver would have been promoted to chairman but was given the title of mayor instead.
“My family and friends all think it’s great,” he says.
He lives in Irthlingborough and attends the Milton Keynes & District Reform Synagogue.
