The London School of Jewish Studies has received a £150,000 grant from the Charles Wolfson Trust to develop facilities for teacher training.

From September, the Hendon-based college will take over responsibility for training teachers for Orthodox schools from the Agency of Jewish Education, which was closed by the United Synagogue. As a result, it will have around 100 students taking undergraduates or master's degrees in Jewish studies or Jewish education, or teacher qualifying programmes.

LSJS dean Raphael Zarum said the move "signals that LSJS is going back to its roots in being involved not only in Jewish education for adults but in the whole gamut of education in the Orthodox community". Next month, it will host a conference for primary teachers in partnership with UJIA and the Institute for Professional Development in Jewish Studies.
