To mark the relaunch of the UK branch of Israeli hunger charity Meir Panim as Manna, 50 supporters took part in a sponsored "soup walk" through the Jewish East End on Sunday.

The themed walk reflected the number of soup kitchens which operated in the area at the turn of the last century feeding thousands of Jews every day. These included the well known Soup Kitchen For The Jewish Poor in Brune Street, Spitalfields.

The walk also took in sights of wider Jewish interest such as Sandys Row Synagogue, the site of Bloom's former Whitechapel restaurant (now a Burger King) and concluded at the historic Bevis Marks Synagogue. At the synagogue, the walkers were welcomed with cups of steaming chicken soup, provided by Restaurant 1701, which is based in the shul grounds.

Manna executive director Gaby Blauer said that the £8,500-plus raised would allow the charity "to make Pesach happen for 170 families in Israel by funding the food they will need".
