Sixty year 10 pupils from four London schools are taking part in the inaugural Alan Senitt community leadership programme, launched in memory of the young British political activist and communal personality who was murdered in Washington DC in 2006.

Set up in partnership with the government-backed Shared Futures project and the Streetwise charity, the scheme links single-faith and multifaith schools including Immanuel College in Bushey and Nower Hill High in Pinner, where Mr Senitt had been a pupil.

The object is for students to learn about each other, to develop leadership skills and to front a variety of community activities.

Recalling Mr Senitt as “a model pupil”, Nower Hill teacher John Mason added: “We feel very privileged as a school to continue Alan’s work.”
Laurel Endelman — who is overseeing the project at Immanuel — said that “meeting students from other backgrounds is a major plus”.

Mr Senitt’s sister Emma hopes the programme will “help equip a new generation with the skills needed to become future communal leaders and activists”.
