An Edgware Jewish primary is one of nine Barnet schools in line for expansion to meet growing demand for places within the borough.

If proposals from Barnet's education chiefs are accepted by the council, the Orthodox and co-educational Menorah Foundation will gain an extra 30 reception places for September 2012.

The council feels the 227-pupil school has the potential to expand to a two-form entry on its site - the governors have already commissioned a feasibility study. It is in an area of high demand and initial research suggests "it could be expanded for £2 million, providing good value for money".

Extra Menorah places would further increase the Jewish provision in Barnet, after Edgware Jewish Primary joined the maintained sector in January and the opening of the Etz Chaim free school in Mill Hill in September. Another free school is set to start in Golders Green in 2012.

Menorah Foundation governors' chair Joseph Holder said: "MFS is an extremely successful and substantially oversubscribed school. Consideration of expanding to two-form entry is simply one of the strategic options."
