Lancaster and Lakes Jewish Community has received a £10,000 Lottery award for events during January commemorating the Holocaust.

In the weeks leading up to January 27, planned events by a steering group — which includes representatives from the Jewish community and other faith groups — will include educational visits to schools and an arts exhibition at the Dukes Theatre.

Chairman Prof Stanley Henig said: “The city has been chosen as one of 70 UK locations for the lighting of a candle to mark the liberation of Auschwitz. This will be within the precincts of Lancaster Castle and will be performed by Stephen Breuer, a Holocaust survivor who lives in the city.”
