The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded £47,000 to the Jewish Council for Racial Equality for a two-year education project on the Kindertransport. The aim is both to reflect the experience of young people who came to Britain to flee Hitler and to understand the lives of child refugees in the UK today.

Eighty children from Jewish, black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities will be trained to gather the oral histories of some of the surviving Kinder. These will be used to create a heritage trail in London and an accompanying booklet which will be distributed to schools, libraries and museums. The interviews will be archived with the Jewish Cultural Centre and the Jewish Museum.

Deputy director Adele Stowe-Lindner said: “Bringing together children from different communities to share their family histories and experiences is one of the best ways to build a positive multi-ethnic society.”
