Close on 1,000 people, mostly schoolchildren, visited the Carlisle staging of the Board of Deputies' Jewish Living Exhibition at Tullie House Museum.

The exhibition, supported by Carlisle City Council, was opened by Board vice-president Jonathan Arkush, who has a house nearby.

He said it was a key role of the Board "to help non-Jews gain a better understanding of our religion and traditions and by doing so help to build trust and strengthen interfaith relations. This responsibility is even more important in areas of the country where only a handful of Jews live."

There are Jewish links to the area - for example, matzah was manufactured for many years at the local Carr's biscuit factory.
