Barmitzvah boy is Scottish Cup-holder

articlemain

Barmitzvah boy Michael Barnett lifted the Scottish FA Cup trophy on Sunday, the day after his beloved Celtic defeated Motherwell 3-0 in the final.

Michael's barmitzvah party was the first held in the Celtic Park stadium complex and as a surprise treat, the kilted celebrant got to parade the cup to the envy of 170 friends and relatives. "I had no idea my dad was going to arrange this," he said. "I was so excited as I walked around all the tables and people took hundreds of photos."

His father Charles is a partner in a firm of auditors which works with the club. "We're all staunch Celtic supporters in our immediate family," he explained. "It was just wonderful that Celtic won the Scottish Cup on the day of Michael's barmitzvah."

The barmitzvah ceremony was at Glasgow's Giffnock and Newlands Synagogue.

Michael is participating in UJIA's bar- and batmitzvah twinning project with young Ethiopians in Israel. He said he would be letting his barmitzvah "twin" know about his party surprise.

"My barmitzvah was perfect, I wouldn't change a thing. I really hope his is perfect too."
