Board of Deputies seeks support for its election manifesto

articlemain

The Board of Deputies has called on the community to make its voice heard on Jewish issues ahead of the general election in May.

It has set up a web page which assists people in their efforts to contact their MPs and prospective parliamentary candidates online.

The Board hopes voters will ask their representatives whether they support the organisation’s Jewish manifesto.

The centrepiece of this document is 10 commitments which outline principles the Board wants representatives to uphold.

These include supporting Holocaust remembrance and religious practices such as shechita and circumcision, as well as opposing antisemitism and “boycotts that divide communities”.

The manifesto was written after consultation with 360 individuals and institutions in the Jewish community.

It also calls on MPs to “affirm the importance of faith schools” and advocate for “a permanent, comprehensive solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict”.
