A decade ago a photograph was published in the New York Times showing an Israeli soldier facing off against a bloodied young man.

The young man was labelled as a Palestinian victim and the image was seized upon as evidence of Israeli aggression. But it then emerged that the young man was an American-Jewish student called Tuvia Grossman who had been savagedly beaten and that the Israeli soldier had been rescuing him.

At the time, his father Dr Aaron Grossman wrote: "That Palestinian is actually my son. He, and two of his friends, were pulled from their taxi-cab while travelling in Jerusalem by a mob of Palestinian Arabs and were severely beaten and stabbed."

Tuvia's uncle added: "The Israeli soldier was actually saving my nephew's life."
