Bite sized bits: Of snack boxes, bacon and trotters

Healthy snacks and kosher are rarely used in the same sentence. Sarah Dembitz has launched Saviour Snacks to change that perception. Boxes of healthy treats including pepper pistachios, chilli olives, and raw cacao bars are sent out on a regular basis or as a one-off gift. Award-winning Israeli publisher LunchBox is hunting for more unusual recipes for its forthcoming Jewish wedding cookbook compendium. The anthology already boasts recipes for Libyan roasted cow’s hearts, Lithuanian golden soup and Georgian kabaluli. Author Nomi Abeliovish and publisher-cum-author Ofer Vardi are asking couples or wedding guests to email their memories of any curious wedding concoctions to oferv@lunch-box.co.il

Mazeltov to Lara Smallman who has been appointed the new director of the Jewish Vegetarian Society. The charity was founded in the 1960s after Vivien Pick wrote to the JC asking to meet like-minded vegetarians. Ms Smallman said that JVS plans include: “Exploring setting up a community allotment, running a pop-up café showcasing the very best of modern vegetarian and vegan cuisine and hosting mystery cooking classes.”

Gefiltefest’s email account is triggering less than kosher automatic banner adverts: the latest was “Love Pork? Try these recipes!” That said, next year’s Gefiltefest festival on June 15 features Maureen Kendler speaking on The Taboo of Pork, a Gefiltefest trustee is named Ms Trotter and last year’s festival included speaker Josephine Bacon and photographer Chaim “Crispy” Bacon.
