Cameron House

Loch Lomond, Scotland

articlemain

There are few hotels where you are welcomed by porters clad in Victorian Highlands hunting gear while coming face to face with the stuffed heads of deer and bears. You could be excused for thinking you've been transported to 19th-century baronial Scotland.

And in a sense, at the five-star Cameron House, you have. Nestled on the banks of Loch Lomond, this property has all the trimmings of an austere Victorian Highland mansion.

But after closer look, a far more modern twist is revealed. The deer and bear heads, for example, are in fact papier-mâché.

Suites are grand and impressively apportioned, and some have a picture-perfect view of the loch.

The rooms are meant to reflect the seasons of the Scottish countryside – ours was a rather foreboding winter's evening – sombre hues prevailed throughout.

Cameron House is relaxed but busy – celebrations and conferences abound. We were there for a Jewish wedding. "I wonder if they'll be lox on the loch?" someone quipped.

Alongside crazy golf, there's a well-crafted 9-hole, the Wee Demon, and the championship Carrick course two miles away. Here you'll find the hotel's Carrick Spa, handy for pre-wedding treatments.

On the loch, there are champagne cruises where you tootle along on the hotel's yacht, passing stunning islands and discovering the history of this most striking of destinations.

If the weather is "dreich", there is a full beauty suite, a spa, indoor pool and slide, squash courts and a fully-staffed crèche and kids' club.

For the best views of the loch with whisky cocktails, the Great Scots Bar, adorned by photos of, somewhat unsurprisingly, great Scots, fits the bill.

There are also three restaurants, one of which, the marina-side Boathouse, serves vegetarian haggis among the breakfast fare.
