Tel Aviv reaches Europa League round of 32

articlemain

It was a memorable night for Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Europa League as they reached the last 32 for the first time.

A second-half penalty from Israel star Eran Zahavi guided them past Bordeaux and into the hat with the likes of Spurs, Swansea and Jewventus.

A draw would have been enough for Tel Aviv to progress from Group F, but the Israeli champions were gifted all three after Munas Dabbur was upended in the penalty by Matthieu Chalmé who was sent off.

Paulo Sousa's side missed a host of chances in a match played in driving rain at Bloomfield Stadium.

The draw for the Europa League round of 32 takes place on Monday.

It was a good night all round for Israeli clubs, with Maccabi Haifa concluding their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Shaktar Karagandy.

Having fallen behind to a 44th minute penalty from Canas, two goals in the last 18 minutes from Shoval Gozlan and Shimon Abuhazira ensured Haifa finished third in Group L.
