Wrestler Ilana Kratysh registered Israel's first medal at the inaugural European Games in Baku.

Kratysh, 24, claimed the silver medal in the women’s 69-kilogram freestyle wrestling competition.

She marked her return from a knee injury by beating Olympic champion Natalia Vorobeva of Russia in the semi-finals.

Having accounted for the former European champion, Kratysh eventually met her match in the final, where she was beaten 3-1 by Alina Stadnik Makhynia of the Ukraine.

Kratysh said: "I’m aware that this is an historic medal for Israel and it is a great honour.

"I’ve been through a tough period and was very emotional after advancing to the final. On the one hand, this is very exciting, but on the other, I really wanted the gold medal."

Sergei Richter won bronze this morning in the shooting.

Alex Shatilov remains on course to medal in the gymnastics competition. He reached the final after finishing in 11th position in the all-round event.
